Toxic Foods for Cats – What Every Cat Parent Must Know

8/12/20251 min read

Cats are very curious by nature and tend to sniff or even lick what their owners are eating. However, a good number of human foods are poisonous to cats, even in a tiny bite. Here are some of those human foods that are a big no-no:

1. Common Toxic Foods for Cats

  • Onions & Garlic – damages red blood cells and causes anemia.

  • Chocolate – Contains theobromine, harmful to cats.

  • Grapes & Raisins – Can lead to kidney failure.

  • Alcohol – Can be fatal even in small amounts.

  • Caffeine (Tea, Coffee, Energy Drinks) – May lead to restlessness, rapid heartbeat, and even seizures.

  • Raw Dough with Yeast – Can lead to stomach pains and alcohol poisoning.

  • Xylitol – Dangerous sweetener that can cause liver failure.

  • Raw Meat, Eggs, & Fish – exposes cats to the risk of salmonella or E. coli infection.

2. Symptoms of Food Poisoning in Cats

  • Vomiting or Diarrhea

  • Loss of appetite

  • Increased/decreased nasal discharge

  • Rapid breathing or heart rate

  • Shaking or seizures

  • Overall weakness or passing out

3. What to Do If Your Cat Eats Toxic Food

  • Contact your vet

  • Make a note of what your cat ate and the quantity.

  • Do not give water or milk unless a vet advises you to.

Cats have special dietary requirements, and feeding them “people food” may be harmful. Stick to cat-safe snacks and ensure harmful foods are out of paws reach.
